當大量現(xiàn)場信息由智能儀表或通過現(xiàn)場總線直接進入計算機控制系統(tǒng)后，存在著計算機內(nèi)部應用程序?qū)ΜF(xiàn)場信息的共享與交互問題。由于缺乏統(tǒng)一的連接標準，工控軟件往往需要為硬件設備開發(fā)專用的驅(qū)動程序。這樣一旦硬件設備升級換代，就需要對相應的驅(qū)動程序進行更改，增加了系統(tǒng)的維護成本。即使計算機中的SCADA有獨立的驅(qū)動程序，但一般也不允許同時訪問相同的設備，否則很容易造成系統(tǒng)崩潰?？梢?，現(xiàn)場控制層作為企業(yè)整個信息系統(tǒng)的底層部分，必然需要與過程管理層和經(jīng)營決策層進行集成，這樣也存在著監(jiān)控計算機如何與其它計算機進行信息溝通和傳遞的問題。由于控制系統(tǒng)往往是不同廠商開發(fā)的專用系統(tǒng)，相互之間兼容性差，與高層的商業(yè)管理軟件之間又缺乏有效的通信接口，因此通信規(guī)范問題成為了制約控制系統(tǒng)突破“信息孤島”的瓶頸。
OPC（OLE for Process Control）的出現(xiàn)，建立了一套符合工業(yè)控制要求的通信接口規(guī)范，使控制軟件可以高效、穩(wěn)定地對硬件設備進行數(shù)據(jù)存取操作，應用軟件之間也可以靈活地進行信息交互，極大提高了控制系統(tǒng)的互操作性和適應性
從軟件的角度來說，OPC可以看成是一個“軟件總線”的標準。首先，它提供了不同應用程序間（甚至可以是通過網(wǎng)絡連接起來的不同工作站上的應用程序之間）實現(xiàn)實時數(shù)據(jù)傳輸?shù)耐ǖ罉藴?；其次，它還針對過程控制的需要定義了在通道中進行傳輸和交換的格式。OPC標準的體系結(jié)構(gòu)為客戶/服務器模式，即將軟件分為OPC服務器和OPC 客戶。OPC服務器提供必要的OPC數(shù)據(jù)訪問標準接口；OPC客戶通過該標準接口來訪問OPC數(shù)據(jù)。
