Full-bandb HDTV signals are primarily found within the TV studio, running between HDTV cameras, VTRs, switchers, and conversion products. These component video signals are usually transmitted as serial digital signals on coax or fiber-optic cable. The characteristics of these serial signals are specified by SMPTE 292M.
This application note describes how to use a Digital Phosphor Oscilloscope (DPO) to perb physical layer testing of a 1.485 Gb/s serial digital HDTV signal. The TDS794D was chosen for this application because of its 2 GHz analog bandb and 250 GS/s equivalent-time sample rate. The Communication Signal Analyzer option is also used (for mask testing). The measurements discussed highlight some of the oscilloscope's capabilities for design debugging, signal characterization, and verification of compliance with industry standards.
