實(shí)現(xiàn)軋鋼生產(chǎn)設(shè)備故障診斷的智能化，可充分利用知識，提高診斷效率，是故障診斷技術(shù)發(fā)展的一個(gè)重要方向。由于目前的PLC產(chǎn)品不具備自動(dòng)獲取和存儲知識的功能，所采用的編程語言無法完成控制層中的計(jì)算推理功能，因此，單純采用PLC的故障診斷系統(tǒng)的智能程度是相當(dāng)有限的。為此，可利用網(wǎng)絡(luò)技術(shù)和通訊技術(shù)，將PLC和操作站聯(lián)接成網(wǎng)絡(luò)，互相取長補(bǔ)短，共同構(gòu)成故障診斷的硬件系統(tǒng)。PLC采用并行分布式結(jié)構(gòu)，作下位機(jī)使用，操作站作為上位機(jī)，可完成PLC的程序下裝，實(shí)施對多臺PLC的管理，進(jìn)行復(fù)雜的數(shù)據(jù)運(yùn)算，建立數(shù)據(jù)庫，存儲知識，其輸入輸出設(shè)備可用作診斷過程的人機(jī)交互。PLC與操作站通過兩種方式聯(lián)接成一個(gè)整體:一是通過PLC的通訊口和操作站的通訊口進(jìn)行聯(lián)接，二是通過PLC的輸入輸出端子與操作站上的開關(guān)量板和A/D板進(jìn)行聯(lián)接。其中，PLC通過通訊口傳遞給上位機(jī)的故障信號多達(dá)2個(gè)或2個(gè)以上時(shí)，上位機(jī)要通過編碼進(jìn)行識別，而通過PLC輸出端子傳遞給上位機(jī)的故障信號，上位機(jī)要通過開關(guān)量板輸入端子的地址來識別。PLC輸入端子可接受來自上位機(jī)的控制信號或故障信號。網(wǎng)絡(luò)中的PLC和操作站在故障診斷系統(tǒng)中各自扮演著不同的角色。
通常情況下，故障診斷過程中復(fù)雜的邏輯判斷、開關(guān)量故障信號的檢測以及在嚴(yán)重故障狀態(tài)下對設(shè)備進(jìn)行的保護(hù)可交給PLC完成，而復(fù)雜的數(shù)值計(jì)算和人機(jī)交互可在上位機(jī)上完成。
